We stock, weld, and install Viking-compatible gate hardware across San Antonio, and most welding or fabrication repairs run between $240 and $680 installed, depending on the part and the extent of the work. If the failure is a broken weld on a hinge, a cracked gate frame, or a snapped post bracket, we can usually have it repaired same day or next morning. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the gate starts dragging on one corner, a hinge pops loose from the post, or the whole frame racks sideways and suddenly won’t latch. In San Antonio’s hot-and-dry summers followed by sudden downpours, the steel expands and contracts hard, and any weld that was marginal from the factory eventually gives way. You’ll usually see rust first, then a crack, then a sag.

Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking builds a broad range of gate hardware, but the welding and fabrication side of things most often touches their swing gate frames, hinge plates, post brackets, and the occasional cantilever or slide gate frame. The model number lives on a small metal tag or sticker, usually near the hinge side on swing gates or on the interior frame rail of slide gates. If the tag has weathered off, which happens often here, we identify compatibility by measuring the frame’s outer rail dimensions, pipe schedule, and hinge offset. One gotcha specific to Viking: their older slide gate frames often use schedule 40 steel rails welded to schedule 80 corner posts, so a repair that simply laps a new plate over the old weld will fail again unless the pipe schedules are matched. We carry both OEM Viking replacement brackets when they’re available and quality aftermarket equivalents that meet or exceed the original steel thickness. For San Antonio’s soil movement, especially in areas like Stone Oak with expansive clay, we typically recommend upsizing the bracket one gauge.

Signs Your Viking Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags hard on the latch side and you can see the frame pulling away from the hinge post. This usually means the weld between the hinge plate and the gate frame has torn, or the post bracket has started to crack. It will only get worse, and every cycle of the gate makes the crack longer.
- You hear a metallic creak or pop when the gate opens, especially in the morning. Cool mornings after hot days cause the steel to contract quickly, and a stressed weld or a hairline crack makes itself known with that sound. It’s the metal telling you where it is about to fail.
- The gate frame is rusting through near the bottom rail, with brown flakes on the concrete below. San Antonio’s summer humidity, even on the drier west side, accelerates that corrosion. You can poke through the steel with a screwdriver, which means it cannot be welded, only replaced.
- The gate hangs level when open but racks when it stops mid-swing. That is a sign the hinge weld or the hinge post itself is flexing, and a flexing hinge post means heaving soil or a cracked weld below ground level. In older neighborhoods like Monte Vista, a failing post footer is more common than people expect.
- One corner of the gate catches the ground only during wet months. When clay soil swells after rain, the post shifts just enough to show which weld has already broken. It often releases again when the soil dries, which is why the problem seems to come and go.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Our welding and fabrication work in San Antonio generally falls into three price bands. A re-weld of a single broken hinge or bracket runs $240 to $380, which includes grinding out the old weld, re-welding with matched rod, and painting the repaired area. A cracked frame repair with a fishplate or gusset reinforcement runs $380 to $520, depending on the length of the crack and whether the gate must be lifted off the hinges to do it right. A full replacement of a rusted bottom rail or a snapped post bracket runs $520 to $680, including removal of the old steel, fitting the new section, and full weld-out. You will know the exact number before we start. We write the price, you approve it, and that number does not move without a conversation first. Every weld is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within the year, we make it right. The price includes drop cloths on your driveway or walkway, cleanup, and a photo of the finished work before we leave.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things a homeowner can safely check before calling. First, look for visible cracking around the hinge plates and brackets: a flashlight and two minutes on a Saturday morning will tell you a lot. Second, if you have a crack propagating across a frame tube, you can mark the end of the crack with a paint pen and watch it over a week. If the mark is trailing, the gate is actively failing. What we recommend against is doing the weld yourself. Welding on a gate that is under tension from its own weight is how people get hurt, and a 120-volt flux-core welder from a big box store cannot match what an industrial welder running on 240 volts will do. The weld looks fine from the outside and breaks again inside six months. If you are in San Antonio and you want it done once, call us at (325) 252-5195. We will give you a written price before any work starts.
FAQs
A properly executed weld on a Viking gate will last 10 to 15 years in San Antonio’s climate if the surrounding steel is sound and the area is painted or coated after the repair. The bigger threat to longevity is unresolved movement in the hinge post, which is why we check the post footing before we weld anything. Call (325) 252-5195 and we will tell you exactly what you are looking at.
Yes, if the surrounding steel is thick enough to accept a fishplate or gusset without turning the repair into patchwork. When the crack is short and the frame tube still has its wall thickness, a reinforced repair is stronger than the original weld. When the steel has thinned from rust, replacement is the honest answer, and we will tell you which one you have.
Most single-weld repairs take two to three hours on site, and we can usually schedule same day or next morning in the San Antonio area. A full bottom rail replacement runs four to six hours. You will have a written price before we begin, with no clock running while we talk.
We keep common Viking hinge plate dimensions, schedule 40 and schedule 80 steel sections, and matched welding rod on the truck, alongside parts we stock for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators. If your gate needs a less common bracket, we measure, order, and return within a few days. Call (325) 252-5195 and describe what you see; we will tell you if it’s on the truck today.
Get it right once, and you won’t have to think about it again. Cody Beckman started by taking apart gates and openers in the Southwest, and nowadays he writes down every model number on a notepad before he touches anything, so you have a record on the way out the door. If your Viking gate is sagging, cracking, or popping in San Antonio, call (325) 252-5195 for a free estimate. We are Latch and Post Gate Repair San Antonio, and while we are not affiliated with Viking, we know their steel well enough to fix it once, correctly.
