BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

If your BFT gate motor has stopped responding, makes a grinding noise, or trips its breaker, we can replace it in San Antonio, usually the same day we diagnose it. A BFT gate motor replacement in San Antonio typically runs between $850 and $1,400 installed, depending on the model and whether the control board and capacitor come along as a matched set. Most homeowners notice the motor failing slowly at first: the gate hesitates halfway, hums without moving, or smells warm after a few cycles.

BFT motors are workhorses, but San Antonio heat and the fine limestone dust from our soil do a number on the capacitor and the internal thermal overload switch. When those go, the motor pulls more current, gets hot, and eventually stops. You’ll know it’s time to call when the gate opens fine one morning and refuses to budge by the afternoon. That’s not a fluke; it’s a motor on its way out.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, but we stock BFT-compatible replacement motors and control boards for the most common swing and slide gate systems in the San Antonio area.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

The BFT motor you need depends on two things: whether your gate slides or swings, and the model series stamped on the motor housing. The most common BFT systems we replace in San Antonio are:

  • BFT Deimos series (Deimos BT, Deimos BT A400, Deimos Ultra) for swing gates
  • BFT Phobos series (Phobos N, Phobos NL, Phobos BT) for swing gates
  • BFT Rigel series (Rigel 5, Rigel 7) for slide gates
  • BFT Aries series for slide gates

Before calling, look for the silver data plate on the side of the motor. It lists the model, the serial number, and the supply voltage, usually 24V or 115V. That voltage matters. A 24V BFT motor cannot be swapped for a 115V unit without changing the transformer and control board, and getting that wrong fries the new motor on the first cycle. We see this mistake often enough that we always verify the data plate ourselves before ordering anything.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: BFT OEM motors are quality pieces, but they are priced accordingly, and lead times from Italy can stretch to two or three weeks. For most San Antonio homeowners, a quality aftermarket motor with matching torque and voltage specs gets the gate running just as reliably at roughly half the cost. We keep both options available and will show you the price difference in writing before you decide. If your gate is a high-cycle commercial setup, we’ll steer you toward the OEM. For a single-family driveway that cycles 20 times a day, the aftermarket unit is the honest choice.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. This points to a failed capacitor. On most BFT swing motors, the capacitor sits inside the housing, and San Antonio heat cooks it slowly. The motor gets power but can’t produce the starting torque to move the gate arm.
  • The gate moves halfway and stops. This is commonly an obstruction-sensing issue, but if you’ve ruled out debris on the track or a struck foundation, the motor’s internal thermal overload is tripping. A worn motor fights itself, gets hot, and shuts down mid-cycle.
  • The gate opens on its own or drifts after closing. On BFT swing systems with a hydraulic piston instead of a screw-drive, internal seal wear lets fluid bypass the piston. The motor may still run, but it can’t hold the gate in position.
  • The control board shows a fault LED but the motor is dead. BFT boards are generally reliable, but a shorted motor winding will take the board with it. If we replace the board and the motor is still drawing too many amps, the next failure is days away, not months.
  • You smell warm electronics near the motor housing. A hot varnish smell means the windings are breaking down. This isn’t a part you wait on. A motor that’s overheating can damage the control board and the transformer, turning a $900 job into a $1,600 job.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Antonio single-family gates, installed BFT motor replacement runs:

Service Typical Range
BFT swing motor replacement (aftermarket, 24V) $850 – $1,100
BFT SWING motor replacement (OEM, shipped from distributor) $1,200 – $1,400
BFT slide motor replacement (aftermarket) $900 – $1,250
Capacitor and wiring harness (add-on, common) $60 – $140

The written price you get before we start includes the motor itself, all labor, any capacitor or harness replacement, programming the control board to the new motor’s limits, and testing the full open-close cycle at least ten times. We also check the gate’s mounting hardware and alignment while we’re at it, because a misaligned hinge will eat a new motor inside a year. If the job needs a new control board or the rack on a slide gate has worn teeth, we’ll show you that as a separate line item and explain why it’s needed. You’ll agree to the number before we touch a wrench.

Every BFT motor we install in San Antonio carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise from Latch and Post Gate Repair. If the motor or the installation isn’t right inside a year, we make it right. No argument, no fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

BFT gate motors run on line voltage feeding the transformer, and some models wire directly at 115V. That’s enough current to hurt someone, and the capacitor inside the motor housing can hold charge even after power is cut. We don’t recommend opening the motor housing yourself unless you have experience with electrical equipment.

What you can safely check: confirm the breaker is on, make sure the manual release lever hasn’t been left engaged, and clear debris from the gate track or hinge path. If the motor hums, smells hot, or the control board shows a fault, that’s the line we’d draw. Diagnosing a BFT board without the right meter usually ends with replacing parts until something works, which costs more than calling us the first time.

FAQs

How long does a BFT gate motor last in San Antonio?
Most BFT motors in the San Antonio climate last 7 to 10 years on a single-family gate. The heat and the limestone dust shorten the lifespan compared to coastal areas, mainly by working the capacitor and thermal overload harder. Gates that cycle more than 40 times a day can see failures in as few as 5 years. Call (325) 252-5195 if your motor is in that window and acting up.

Can the BFT motor be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes yes. If the failure is limited to the capacitor or the wiring harness, repair is a $60 to $140 fix and we’ll do that first when it’s the honest option. If the motor windings are burned, the bearings are shot, or the piston seals are worn, replacement is the only reliable path. We’ll tell you which one you’re looking at before any work starts.

How long does the swap take?
Most BFT motor replacements on a San Antonio swing gate take 2 to 3 hours from arrival to final testing. Slide gate motors run about the same. If the control board needs replacement or the gate is badly out of alignment, plan on another hour. We’ll give you a time estimate when we give you the written price.

Do you stock BFT motors on the truck?
We carry aftermarket BFT-compatible swing and slide motors for the most common models, along with capacitors, wiring harnesses, and control boards. OEM BFT motors typically ship from a distributor and take a week to arrive in San Antonio. If you need OEM and can’t wait, ask us about a loaner motor option.
