Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace Elite keypad and intercom systems across San Antonio, typically for $165 to $420 installed depending on whether the keypad, the intercom module, or both need attention. Most Elite keypad and intercom repairs can be completed the same day we arrive because we keep the common Elite-compatible parts on the truck. The way most people discover theirs has failed is quiet: the keypad lights up but the gate won’t move, the intercom crackles when a delivery driver buzzes, or the whole unit just goes dark one morning after a hard rain.

Elite systems are built around the idea that one keypad or intercom controls one gate, and when that connection breaks, the gate stops listening. Our crew handles this specific failure all over San Antonio, from the older tree-lined streets near Olmos Park to the newer subdivisions around Alamo Ranch, and we’ll explain exactly what’s wrong before we touch anything.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite keypads and intercoms fall into a few distinct families, and the repair path depends on which one you have. The two most common we see in San Antonio are the Elite R1000 series keypads (often sold with Elite SL-3000 and SL-1500 slide gate operators) and the Elite Q1000 wireless keypads, which pair with a receiver like the Elite RPT-1 or RPT-2. Intercom repairs usually involve the Elite EID series entry stations, which surface on both swing and slide gates.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that most people don’t know: an Elite keypad from a swing gate will not always talk to a slide gate operator without a receiver change. The keypad itself may be identical, but the receiver frequency and channel settings in the operator control board differ. That’s why we ask for a photo of the label on the back of your existing keypad, or the operator cover plate, before we quote. It saves a wasted trip and a wrong part.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question, we’ve learned to be picky. For Elite keypads, the OEM units are weather-sealed in a way that several cheaper aftermarket copies we’ve tested simply aren’t. San Antonio summers punish cheap gaskets, and we’ve replaced too many third-party keypads that fogged up inside after one season. If your budget is tight, there are one or two aftermarket options we’ll recommend, but we’ll always tell you which one has held up in the Texas heat and which one we stopped carrying.

One more identifier that helps: Elite keypads have a serial number sticker inside the battery compartment. That number tells us the trim and frequency version, and it’s the fastest way to match the right part without guessing.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but the gate won’t open. This usually means the keypad is transmitting, but the receiver inside the operator isn’t seeing the signal. Often it’s a channel drift after a power blink, or the receiver antenna has come loose. The keypad isn’t always the culprit, and we test the receiver before we quote a new keypad.
  • Intermittent response after rain. Water gets into the keypad housing through a worn gasket or a hairline crack in the faceplate. Here in San Antonio we get sudden downpours followed by blazing sun, and that cycle is hard on outdoor electronics. The corrosion we find on the terminals usually confirms this one.
  • Intercom audio drops to static when someone presses the call button. This is often a failing capacitor in the intercom board or a damaged run of wire between the entry station and the house phone. We check the wire first because replacing a board when the wire is bad just brings the same symptom back in a month.
  • Buttons require a hard press, or the backlight flickers. The membrane on Elite keypads wears out from repeated use and UV exposure. Once the membrane starts to go, the contacts beneath it oxidize and the code entry becomes unreliable.
  • The keypad beeps but the gate opens for someone else’s code. This is a programming corruption issue inside the keypad processor. A reset and reprogramming sometimes fixes it, but if it comes back, the board is failing and the keypad should be replaced.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Elite keypad and intercom work in San Antonio, here’s the range we quote most often:

Technician performing professional electric sliding gate repair and maintenance nationwide
  • Keypad replacement only: $165 to $285 installed. The keypad itself runs $80 to $160 depending on the model, and the labor covers the swap, programming, and a full test with your existing remote.
  • Intercom entry station replacement: $195 to $330 installed. The entry station unit runs $110 to $220, with the balance covering wiring checks, mounting, and audio verification.
  • Both keypad and intercom together: $310 to $420 installed. Most people who replace both do it at one visit, and there’s a labor saving when we’re already on site.
  • Diagnostic visit with no parts needed: $85. If it’s a loose wire or a programming fix and no part is required, you pay only the diagnostic. That charge is waived if we do the repair the same visit.

The price we quote includes the part, the labor, the programming, and a full test before we leave. You’ll see the exact number in writing before any work begins. Every power connection test and signal check is included in that number, not added on after the fact.

All Elite keypad and intercom repairs are covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it isn’t right, we make it right. No argument, no fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do three things on your own before you spend a dime: check the keypad’s battery if it has one, look for loose wires at the back of the unit with the power off, and verify the operator itself still works using a hard-wired button. Those three checks often get the gate running again when the problem is just a dead battery or a pulled wire.

What you should not do is open the operator control board to test receiver voltage, or attempt to rewire an intercom entry station while it’s powered. Elite intercom boards carry low voltage but they’re sensitive to shorts, and a slipped probe can burn out a board that was fine a minute ago. We’ve seen well-intentioned DIY attempts turn a $30 wiring fix into a $200 board replacement. If you’re not sure, call us at (325) 252-5195 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth a service call.
